Our Story
The Building Officials Institute of New Zealand was formed following an amalgamation of the New Zealand Institute of Building Inspectors Inc and the Plumbing and Drainage Institute Inc in 1998. This was followed by the amalgamation with the Clerk of Works in 2002.
The New Zealand Institute of Building Inspectors (NZIBI) was formed in 1967 which is the date now adopted by the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ or the Institute) as its commencement date. The New Zealand Institute of Building Inspectors established 8 branches which still survive today. The addition of Northland branch in 2009 makes the 9 branches we have today.
The first meeting of NZIBI was held on 31 May 1967 at the Paparua County Council Officers in Christchurch, following an interim committee being formed in the previous year by the Engineers and Chief Building Inspectors of the Christchurch Metropolitan Area. 72 people enrolled as members and this was expected to double in the first twelve months. The annual subscription was set at 2 pounds 10 shillings reducible to 2 pounds if paid by due date.
The first national conference was held in 1986 in Nelson. Presidents were elected for a three-year term and a central National Office was formed in 2005 with key deliverables in the areas of advocacy, training, information services and general products and services to support the membership.
The Institute’s Training Academy was established in 2006 to enhance the education and training offering to Building Surveyors and Building Control members The Institute was instrumental in the development and course material content for New Zealand’s building surveying qualifications which now include:
- The New Zealand Certificate in Building regulatory Environment
- The New Zealand Diploma in Building Surveying
- The Batchelor in Building Surveying and Control (BBSC)
The Training Academy continues to offer high quality training courses for individuals at various stages of their career whether at fundamental, intermediate or advanced levels
Community Engagement
The Institute is committed to ensuring the quality of New Zealand's buildings meet the requirements of the community and their occupiers. Poor quality building options are not acceptable and all involved in the building industry need an acute awareness of the Building Code and associated regulations, thereby ensuring the community has overall faith in New Zealand's building stock.
During February/March 2011 the Institute preformed a valuable task in the co-ordination of over 400 Building Officers/Inspectors into Christchurch immediately after the February 22nd earthquake, at no cost to the community. The significant majority of the Building Surveyors involved were Institute members. Our members continue to support event recovery in the building environment whether they be floods, fires, earthquakes, or wind damage. There is not a year where our members are not engaged in this activity to support communities across New Zealand
The Institute's Charities Commission registration number is CC10119.
